Apple Cider and Weight Loss

There is not much scientific support but apple cider vinegar has caught the attention of researchers because of its weight loss effects. It has long been used in the days of Hippocrates in treating wounds, colds, and allergies.

Apple cider vinegar is actually just apple juice fermented by yeast and converted into alcohol. Bacteria then turns the alcohol into acid producing what we now know as apple cider vinegar.

Japanese scientists have discovered that drinking apple cider vinegar has a good effect on obesity. The acetic acid produced by fermentation made the participants lose fat especially in the belly area. In addition to losing belly fat, apple cider vinegar also made participants fuller and more satisfied after a meal. Their guts were also healthier!

The amount of good and bad bacteria in your gut affects your metabolism and your ability to lose weight. Probiotics are the what we know as the good bacteria. These good bacteria thrive on carbohydrates not digested by the body called prebiotics. This is essential for their survival inside the gut. Guess what? Apple cider vinegar is a prebiotic and is food for the good bacteria. This will make them healthy and flourishing leading to a healthier gut.

Be mindful though that apple cider vinegar has some risks due to its acidity. It may cause throat irritation if taken frequently or in large amounts so make sure it’s diluted. Also, it may interact with drugs and supplements and may lower potassium levels.

Indeed, apple cider vinegar can truly help you in your journey to a healthier weight and a healthier life. You can use it as a marinade, dressing, or even a drink (8oz water + 1 tbsp apple cider). Just don’t forget to combine it with a healthy diet and quality exercise because taking it alone won’t do the trick. And remember that apple cider vinegar is still an acid. Be safe!
